About

Hello and welcome.  My name is Anna Michalak, and I am the Founding Director of the Climate and Resilience Hub at the Carnegie Institution for Science and a Professor in the Department of Earth System Science in the Doerr School of Sustainability at Stanford University.  Prior to joining Carnegie, I was the Frank and Brooke Transue Faculty Scholar and Associate Professor at the University of Michigan.  I received my Ph.D. and M.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Stanford University, and a B.Sc.(Eng.) in Environmental Engineering from the University of Guelph, Canada.

My research interests lie in two areas. The first is assessing the impacts of climate change on inland and coastal water quality via influences on nutrient delivery to, and on conditions within, water bodies. The second area is understanding and quantifying the cycling and emissions of greenhouse gases at the Earth surface at urban to global scales – scales directly relevant to informing climate and policy – primarily through the use of atmospheric observations that provide the clearest constraints at these critical scales.

In addition, having spent many years exploring the interplay between human action, the Earth’s water and carbon cycles, and climate, I now want to narrow the gap between knowledge and action by enabling and scaling solutions for climate. I am also passionate about developing tools for empowering individuals to effect change and enable a sustainable future.
